How do you keep kids speaking Vietnamese after they start school?

My eldest started prep this year and within a term she answers me in English no matter what I say. My mum says I did the same thing. What actually worked for you: Saturday school, only-Vietnamese-at-dinner, grandparents on FaceTime, bribery?

Saturday school helped less than I expected. What worked was a rule: at the dinner table, anyone who speaks English has to clear the dishes. My son is now fluent and lazy.

FaceTime with grandparents, daily, non-negotiable. Mine will not switch to English because bà refuses to learn it, which turns out to be the most effective immersion program available.

Cartoons dubbed in Vietnamese. Doraemon did more for my niece’s vocabulary than any of us.

In Village de l’Est the kids speak Vietnamese because the whole neighborhood does. If you can, find the neighborhood. If you cannot, build one: three families is enough.
