01How the community formed
Vietnamese have lived along the Mekong in what is now Cambodia since before either country drew its modern boundary. The community was expanded by French colonial administration, then devastated: expelled in 1970, targeted for extermination under the Khmer Rouge, and returning after 1979 to a country that has never fully settled its legal status. Many families in the floating villages of the Tonlé Sap still hold no citizenship of anywhere.
The migrations that built it
- 01 Pre-colonial settlement along the Mekong
- 02 French Indochina: clerks, fishers and rubber workers
- 03 1970 expulsions and the Khmer Rouge years
- 04 Return and statelessness, 1979 onward
