01How the community formed
Taiwanese manufacturers moved production to Vietnam in the 1990s, and the traffic went both ways. Vietnamese women married into Taiwanese families in large numbers through the 2000s, and their children are now a visible part of a generation that Taiwan calls the new residents. Sunday afternoons in the great hall of Taipei Main Station, when the whole community seems to sit down on the floor together, are the clearest picture of it.
The migrations that built it
- 01 1990s: factory labor, following Taiwanese investment in Vietnam
- 02 2000s: marriage migration
- 03 2010s onward: caregivers and students
