  • sentence-final politeness particle

  • thưa

    respectful opener (“thưa bác…”)

  • xin phép

to ask permission (before leaving, eating, speaking)

  • mời

to invite (say it before eating!)

02

Phrases

  • Con mời ông bà ăn cơm.

I invite grandpa and grandma to eat.

Said before every meal by the youngest at the table.

  • Dạ, con xin phép đi trước ạ.

Yes, please allow me to leave first.

  • Thưa bác, con là con của má Thảo.

Excuse me, uncle, I am Thảo’s child.

Tips

  • Start every answer to an elder with “dạ”. End it with “ạ”. You now sound raised right.
  • “Mời” before eating is non-negotiable. Go around the table oldest to youngest.
