Families overseas ask me this constantly. Textbooks teach Northern. Most of the diaspora speaks Southern. Central speakers get told they are hard to understand by everybody. I teach whichever accent the grandparents speak, but I want to hear how other people decide.

I teach Saturday school in Seattle and we settled on: grandparents’ accent at home, textbook Northern for reading. The kids code-switch fine. They are better at this than we are.

Central speaker here. My accent gets subtitled on national television. Teach the kids whichever one their family speaks and let them be teased about it like the rest of us.
