Which accent should kids abroad learn?

Families overseas ask me this constantly. Textbooks teach Northern. Most of the diaspora speaks Southern. Central speakers get told they are hard to understand by everybody. I teach whichever accent the grandparents speak, but I want to hear how other people decide.

What does “Việt kiều” mean to you?

In Sài Gòn it was said to me with a smile and a higher price. In Paris my grandmother says it about herself with pride. My cousin in Berlin hates the word entirely. Where are you and what does it mean where you stand?
