Visiting for the first time as an adult: where do I start?

Born in Houston, never been. My parents left from Vũng Tàu in 1980 and will not come with me. I have three weeks and no idea whether to start north or south. Tell me what you did on your first trip back.

Start where your parents left. Go to Vũng Tàu first, stand on the beach, then go north. The rest of the trip lands differently after that.

Three weeks is enough for south to north if you fly one leg. Come through Cần Thơ, I will take you out on the market at four in the morning.
