Born in Houston, never been. My parents left from Vũng Tàu in 1980 and will not come with me. I have three weeks and no idea whether to start north or south. Tell me what you did on your first trip back.

My dad is 71. I have asked about 1981 maybe ten times in my life and gotten ten different one-sentence answers. My cousin says her mum finally opened up when she asked in Vietnamese instead of English. Has anyone found a way in?

In 1988 my dad borrowed a 60-quart pot from a church friend, bought bones from a butcher who gave him credit, and sold phở out of a Bolsa Avenue storefront with two tables. This is the long version, because he is finally retiring and somebody should write it down.

Bolsa is changing a storefront at a time. I am shooting every hand-painted sign on the avenue this year and I want yours too: family photos in front of the shop, the old signage, the mall before the renovation. Post them here, credit stays with you.
