01How the community formed

The first boat reached Darwin in 1976. What followed was the intake that ended any pretence of a white-only immigration policy, and the suburbs where those families settled — Cabramatta in Sydney, Footscray and Springvale in Melbourne, Inala in Brisbane — became the most Vietnamese places outside Vietnam. Cabramatta went through a decade of heroin and headlines in the nineties and came out the other side as the country’s best-known food destination.

The migrations that built it

  1. 01 1976–1980s: boats to Darwin, then camps to Sydney and Melbourne
  2. 02 1980s–1990s: family reunion
  3. 03 2000s onward: students and skilled migration

Footscray market haul: green papaya, a kilo of prawns, and a packet of bún I definitely did not need. Bún bò Huế for eight tonight, nobody RSVP’d, all eight will come.
